I’ve been in Indy for about three weeks now, and I’m doing well. Life at a magazine is a different pace than a newsroom, but the people at SPJ are amazing. It’s a small office – nine people when no interns are present – and everyone seems to get along well.
I live with the other intern, Bridget Thoreson from Marquette University. Neither of us are morning people and we live far enough from the office that we wake up at 6:30 a.m. Needless to say, it’s painful.
But Indy is overall really spread out. This picture is taken at Monument Circle, which is the heart of Indy’s downtown. For a city of 780,000, it feels much smaller most of the time. Even on a sunny day, there weren’t many people hanging out downtown.
One thing Bridget and I have both noticed is there seems to be very little panhandling for this size city. She was raised in Chicago and is used to much more homelessness. I think I saw more panhandlers walking the 10 blocks from my house in Chico to school than I have the whole time I’ve been in Indy.
I’ll try to keep this more up to date now that I’m settling in. I plan to post pictures of my office and my Indy home soon.
