Ever since my experiment with ribs in Memphis, I have decided to sample the local flavor of the cities I visit along my roadtrip. In Cajun country, this means frog legs, alligator and anything else that lives in the many swamps.

We went to Prejean’s (pronounced pray-johns) for Cajun cuisine and live music both nights in Lafayette, La. My dad and I are staying with Linda (pictured below), who lives in a beautiful country home outside the city.

Brea, Linda and Calvin at Prejean’s in Lafayette, La. In my hands is the leftovers of my deep fried dinner, which included fried oysters, shrimp, a frog leg, catfish, alligator and other Cajun cooking.
(Forgive the red eyes, I have no time for Photoshop, but I will put up clean pictures when I get to California.)

Today we toured a plantation and went to a swamp nature preserve, where I got to see live alligators.

If you look closely, you can see an alligator’s face in the swampy water. We saw a car pulled on the side of the road, so I got out to see what they were looking at. By the time I figured it out, I was a few feet away from this “gator.” It sort of put in perspective my dinner from last night. And yes, alligator does taste like chicken.
